The development of advanced materials and technologies for electric vehicles was always essential for Israel’s energy independence.
The necessity to transition away from internal combustion engines (ICE) and move toward battery and fuel-cell based propulsion for transportation was among the main driving forces behind the establishment of the national program to reduce Israel’s dependence on crude oil – The Fuel Choices and Smart Mobility Initiative.
Following the establishment of this initiative and through the government-led INREP and TEPS consortiums of academia and industry, the development and industrialization of energy and electric propulsion technologies has been sped up significantly.
INREP, the Israel National Research Center for Electrochemical Propulsion, is an academia-centric program. The consortium, comprised of 6 Israeli academic institutions, with membership from several industry corporations, is focused on academic research conducted at Technology Readiness Levels 1-3.
TEPS, Transportation Electric Power Solution, is an industry-centric program. The consortium,
comprised of 5 industrial corporations, and supported by 4 Israeli academic institutions, is focused on industrial R&D conducted at Technology Readiness Levels 3-7+.
Today, there are over 80 companies active in these fields, operating in five primary sub-domains. Beyond Mobility has reviewed these companies operating in the fields of energy storage, electric propulsion and EV technologies. Beyond Mobility also conducted interviews with all relevant research facilities, as well as with industry leaders in the field. The conclusions from this research are:
- Innovation can be found across all sub-domains of the industry. Lithium-ion cell-level battery
technology is a primary area of innovation; - Academic research has been proven to be a driving force of innovation;
- Many of the companies active in the field and developing disruptive technologies are currently relatively early-stage. As witnessed by the significant influence of programs the likes of INREP and TEPS. These companies’ solutions can be shaped and formed in response to industry needs.

Amongst those companies, we can find Electreon. According to Mr. Oren Ezer, Electreon Co-Founder & CEO: “Electric mobility is already here, soon it will need to scale up in order to support millions of vehicles of different types, doing so based only on batteries and complex challenging infrastructure is very challenging. Electreon is currently building demo projects in Sweden and in Tel Aviv that will show the world that wireless roads that charge EVs on the go, can push the electric revolution forward towards full implementation, starting with the challenging segments of heavy utility vehicles such as long haul trucks and urban buses”.
Electreon is a global leader in developing and implementing wireless electric roads (ERS); the platform of the future for charging EVs on the go – decreasing the size of the battery and load on the grid, smoothening operation and eliminating visual hazards. Electreon’s go to market is the huge sector of urban buses and long-haul intercity trucks that emits significant share of global transportation GHG emissions and has no good reduction solution. Since wireless ERS is a shared platform, it enables also all other type of EVs to be charged by the same infrastructure with no additional investment costs.
